Corkscrew Pass

Corkscrew is a relatively easy Jeep trail that passes through Red Mountains 1 and 2, about five miles south of Ouray. The Red Mountains get their name from the reddish iron ore rocks that cover the surface.

Moose Sighting

These photos were taken by my friend Anthony Morabito near Animas Forks, the ghost town just up the road from Silverton. I had no idea there were moose this close to us! There were some moose sightings up Lizard Head Pass a couple of years ago, and also over in the Lake City and Creede area. Hopefully I'll see them sometime!

Cold at Lake Como

We drove above Lake Como last week while driving California and Hurricane Passes. Lake Como is at the top of Poughkeepsie Gulch and is the headwaters for the Uncompahgre River.

Here are a couple of warmer shots from August 2009 taken after we drove up Poughkeepsie Gulch.

Be careful out there! This was near the summit of Ophir Pass last week. I think they were okay.

Snow on Ophir Pass

There is still a good deal of snow at the summit of Ophir Pass. We had so much snow this spring that Imogene Pass still isn't open.

*Update: Imogene Pass opened today. Yea Road and Bridge Department!

Dead End

That's Ingram Falls on the left and Bridal Veil Falls on the right. The road comes to an end here east of town unless you drive or hike up to the falls.
