SkyWatch Friday: The Sneffels Range

From the overlook on highway 62, part of the Continental Divide, Mt. Sneffels stands tall at 14,150 feet above sea level. Mt. Sneffels is only 7 miles or so straight from Telluride, but it takes 30 minutes to reach this overlook by car, and even longer when accessing the trailhead in Yankee Boy Basin, by 4-wheel drive only. We camped as close as we could to Sneffels when my husband hiked it a couple of years ago.

Phone Booth

Awhile back a few bloggers posted photos of their British-style phone booths. This one is in Mountain Village near the ice skating pond. The architecture is very European in Mountain Village, so the phone booths really fit in.

The Mountain Village core is totally empty during the off season. I felt kind of like I was walking around a place I wasn't supposed to be.

The Castle

I really liked my night photos of the castle at Disneyland more than my day photos. I promise to get back to posting Telluride photos this week!! We just had 2 more feet of snow and I have hardly been out. I'm trying to have a positive attitude about the snow since we are likely to get even more, but I just haven't been in the mood to get out and take new photos. Hopefully the mood will strike soon!

Take a Hike

We received a few more inches of snow last night, which made me want to look at my summer photos. When ski season is over, I'm ready for the snow to stop! This was taken in early June last year on the Eider Creek hiking trail just after everything had finally turned green.

I'm back from our trip to California! It was nice to get away from the snow for awhile. This photo was taken from the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage in Disneyland.

Someone is Watching

The bear on the third floor is a permanent fixture at Cimarron Lodge. The bears will be waking up soon and coming into town at night searching for food in open trash cans. Everyone had better remember to start locking their trash cans!

Costume Party

It is a tradition to dress up weird or in some kind of costume on the last day of ski season. Really, I think a lot of people in Telluride use any excuse to dress weird just for the fun of it.

My World Tuesday

This is the view of Lizard Head Peak, Mt. Wilson, El Diente and Wilson Peak at the top of lift 12. Sunday was the last time of the season to ride lift 12. Perhaps I can hike up to this area this summer.

The Last Hurrah

Sunday was unofficially the last official day to ski, or the other way around. Telski surprised everyone a few weeks ago with extending the ski season past April 5, running only lifts 7 and 9 through April 12. This is the view of Gorrono Ranch from lift 4, and a closing day party going on at the "beach." We received a total of 294 inches of snow this ski season, ending on a strange note after Friday's dust storm.

More Red

Even though we did get a fresh blanket of snow, I thought I would share a couple more photos of Friday's dust storm. The street and the San Miguel County Courthouse looked quite eerie.

The Dust Storm and the Block Party

Friday afternoon the KOTO Radio Annual Pink Flamingo End of Season Street Dance and Costume Party was held on Columbia Street complete with live music from Ralph Dinosaur and His Fabulous Volcanoes and The Strolling Scones. A strange dust storm moved in during the party which turned the sky shades of brown, orange and red. The red dust is from southwestern Colorado and southeastern Utah. We have had three dust storms right before a snowstorm recently, but this one was by far the largest and strangest.

I only saw a few people dressed up in pink for the party and the costume contest.

At one point the wind picked up and tried to blow away one of the New Belgium beer canopies. I'm not sure why this got a big cheer from the crowd. Perhaps they had been partaking of a few too many New Belgium beverages.

Of course, we woke up to a fresh new layer of snow this morning, which means we have three different layers of dirt in our snowpack now.

SkyWatch Friday

This is what the sky has looked like for most of this week around here!! We have had snowstorm after snowstorm and are expecting another one this weekend. This is looking up at the Sundance ski run.

The Adirondacks

I am referring to Adirondack chairs, not the mountains in New York. Someone keeps these chairs along the Sundance ski run, always empty when I am skiing by.

Theme Day: Yellow

The theme day "Yellow" has been the most challenging for me so far. The first thing that popped into my head is yellow snow and even though it is April Fool's Day, I thought a photo of that would just be gross. I chose to photograph the sun on the Ute Park tipi.

I posted some photos of the tipi earlier in the ski season, but here is a newer one of me and my oldest daughter. She usually snowboards, but this season decided to learn to ski so she can pick what she wants to do for the snow conditions. Happy Theme Day!
