It looks like ski season will go out with a BANG this year!! It has been freezing cold and snowing with no end in sight. When I skied yesterday the temperature ranged from 12 to 19 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the bridge I was getting ready to ski across on the run Teddy's Way.
This isn't a high quality photo after scanning it, but my dad took this in 1986 and I love how mystical Bridal Veil Falls looks.
This is the same break in the clouds that I posted yesterday, my view right when I got off of lift 7 this week.
I suppose I could have saved this one for a SkyWatch Friday photo, but the river photos I was planning to use this weekend just look kind of drab. Have a great weekend!
Ajax Peak appeared to be missing it's peak earlier this week. The yellow construction area is the site of new luxury residences named Element 52. I'm very glad the red crane is not a permanent fixture. The ski run Kids Hill and the gondola are just to the right of Element 52. I think the construction has created quite an eyesore for close to a year now, but will be a beautiful place to live. I was totally focused on the sky when I took this photo, and got a little distracted by the crane!
This last full week of March has turned out to be a snowy one. The ski area is reporting 16 inches so far this week, and an even bigger storm is on it's way today. The ski run straight ahead is Milk Run. Last week the lower part was closed for a few days for lack of snow. I think it is open again today, but I haven't seen anyone on it.
When I took this photo I realized I only made first tracks one time this whole ski season! I guess I've been too lazy to be the first one on the lifts.
I snapped this as I waited for my husband at the lift ticket office at the bottom of lift 7. He went off and forgot his season pass yesterday and had to get a temporary printed out. We've been very fortunate to have a spring snowstorm this week!

Someone must be on spring break this week! For the rest of March, the slopes will be more crowded than usual. We stopped in Mt. Village to get some lunch this week while skiing, but there wasn't even a place to put our skis. A free lunch at home was just fine that day.
I know it's common to have a sign posted for a private driveway, but a ski run? I guess this is someone's shortcut home off of lower Boomerang.
From Telluride Trail, Telluride looks like a bunch of little dollhouses. The skiers pictured are at the top of the ski run Kids Hill, a steep shortcut.
This ski-in, ski-out home has been for sale all of ski season. They often display the big "OPEN HOUSE" sign in hopes skiers will enter the back door for a tour. I thought about going in, but taking off my skis and boots just seemed like a pain to look at a house I can't afford. I haven't priced this one, but I'm sure it is at least a couple million or more.
My parents came across this photo recently and mailed it to me. It was taken by my dad in 1982. I honestly don't remember this vacation. I plan to re-create this photo if I can find the exact spot where Dad was standing. Nothing looks familiar to me except for the mountains and the elementary school in the distance on the left side of the road. We spent a lot of time in the town of Ouray on summer vacations and would only drive over to Telluride for a little while, so it isn't likely we have very many more photos. Those were the days when you were careful how many pictures you took so you wouldn't run out of film before you got home. Maybe I should search through my grandparents' photos sometime.
I saw the friendly porcupine again this week. He was begging for food at the Lynx pomma lift.
"I live in a very small house, but my windows look out on a very large world."
It is very common to see a ski patrolman zooming up a run on a snowmobile. This allows them to get from one work area to another, or to bring an injured skier down off of the mountain in a toboggan.
The other day when I was at the top of lift 12, I noticed a couple of people standing at the top of the mountain across from me. This is outside the area of the ski resort, so they were enjoying some backcountry skiing. I'm not sure if they hiked up there from Alta Lakes, or perhaps flew by helicopter, known as heliskiing. If you click on the photo to see the larger version, you may be able to see the tiny people inside that notch above the wide snow patch.
The climbing rock in Mt. Village still has a pile of snow on top and around it. I've seen this place be pretty busy in the summertime. Great place to practice.
The outdoor ice skating pond in Mt. Village is now closed. We've just had too many warm days to keep the pond frozen. My daughter said the skating pond in Telluride Town Park is slushy, but I haven't been down there to see it in awhile.
These photos were taken by my husband when he hiked and skied down Bald Mountain, the same mountain in my post yesterday. There is one double black run and one double black EX (Extreme Terrain) run. I'm thinking about doing this hike sometime in the summer.
The mountain in the center of this photo is Bald Mountain, a popular place to hike to ski in Telluride. There were actually some people hiking up when I took this photo.

On an earlier post I mentioned the area of the Lynx lift was a common place to see porcupines, and that I had never seen one in the wild. I was ecstatic when I skied upon one on a run near the Lynx lift area this week! I really didn't mean to disturb his day and I don't think people should get close to wildlife, but this guy was so friendly and obviously used to being fed by humans. If this had been say a bear or elk, I definitely would NOT get this close.
This is a short video of the porcupine approaching me and trying to climb up my leg. Someone said that before I skied up to him, a man had been laying on the ground and let the porcupine walk all over him, so I was pretty sure he wasn't going to bite or stick me with his quills. I wish my video was longer, but I was really nervous and trying not to freak out.
Another glass photo that I considered for the theme day for March was of our Sunshine Pharmacy. Thank goodness for this place! If we didn't have a pharmacy here, we would have to drive over an hour to get to one! They also have a nice and reasonably priced selection of T-shirts and souvenirs.

I almost chose this glass as my theme day photo for March. This is the Floradora Saloon on Main Street. They have a wide variety of food, but their homemade pickles are definitely a plus to the hamburgers!
This is a stained glass window at the shop Sunglass HQ. I admit I did photoshop it a bit to bring out the blues and purples. I can't believe it is already March!!
