A Different World

My photo for the last day of 2008 is actually not in Telluride, but I just had to share it. This is the Delicate Arch at Arches National Park in Moab, Utah. Moab is only a 2 hour drive from Telluride, and is a completely different place, but equally magical and beautiful. We managed to hike to the Delicate Arch this week despite the icy and snowpacked trail. It was a 27 degree day and was so interesting to see again because the last time we hiked up to the Arch it was 100 degrees in the beginning of summer. Someone should definitely start a Moab Daily Photo. The views from town, Arches and at Canyonlands National Park are breathtaking and surreal. The mountains you can see are the La Sal Mountains, which I have shown from the ski runs in previous photos. Arches is on the other side of these mountains from Telluride.

I've realized how difficult posting a daily photo in your hometown can be, especially since our hometown is so small. Sometimes it's fun to share views in the surrounding area. Here's to 2009 and 365 more photos!! Happy New Year to everyone!!

Ski Biking

Ski biking looks like a lot of fun and is something I might want to try sometime. It just looks awkward to have to hold one on the ski lifts.

Through the Aspens

Peeking at Ajax Peak through the naked aspen trees. As of this morning, the ski resort reports we have had 137 inches of snow since November.

Polar Queen

It was so cold at the top of the ski run Polar Queen that my camera kept shutting off. I realized my camera was forming a thin layer of ice inside my pocket!

No Lift Lines

Much of the year in Telluride we are spoiled to no ski lift lines. The next couple of weeks will be busy for Christmas break, but generally we have enough mountain for everyone that you will not experience a wait to ride back up the slopes.

Christmas Lights

There aren't many homes with Christmas lights in Telluride. It must be that everyone is conserving electricity. This is a couple of my favorites on Main Street.

Trail Safety

The back of this man's yellow jacket says "Trail Safety" as he is the monitor for people skiing down Misty Maiden. He makes sure no one goes flying into the lift 4 line or into the Village core.

The Beach

Looks like a beach, doesn't it? The area where the snow from the ski runs meets the heated walking area of Mt. Village is called The Beach.

Advertising and Information

There are many racks like this around town full of information about skiing, shopping, dining, the local newspaper, and of course, real estate info.

It was snowing heavily into our eyes as I snapped this photo taking my daughter to another of her favorite shops, Zia Sun.

A Few More of The Sweet Life

A few more shots from when I took my daughter to The Sweet Life this week. It's a popular place for kids to hang out after school.

The Sweet Life

The Sweet Life is Telluride's '50's inspired candy and ice cream shop and grill, and a place that my daughters love. Okay, I love it too, and their chocolate shakes are awesome!! They have opened a new location in Aspen/Snowmass. I'm curious to see if Aspen Daily Photo will visit and take some photos of the new shop, which is beautiful from the pictures I've seen on the internet.

Magic Carpet

The Magic Carpet is for first time skiers, and is a conveyor belt to ride on to get back up the little hill. Telluride has one for children and one for adults.

Slow Skiing Zone

This is the bridge you have to ski under to get to the beginner run, the Meadows. I was scared to death to ski here when I first learned.

Time to Ski

We only have a small number of ski runs open, but it's good for a warm up and getting back into ski shape. The run here is the lower part of See Forever, and the snow machines were groing strong up there all day.

Theme Day: Circles/Spheres

For a December them day, circles and spheres naturally made me think of Christmas tree ornaments.

See Forever

I am visiting family in Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, so this week I have posted pictures from the 2007-2008 ski season.

See Forever is a popular blue run with the locals and tourists. I was facing west when I took this photo. The snowcapped mountains way in the distance are the La Sal Mountains in Utah.

I am visiting family in Oklahoma this week for Thanksgiving, so I have posted pictures from the 2007-2008 ski season.

My husband actually took this photo as he began to ski the black run Confidence. I don't ski the runs that are this steep. I really don't have enough confidence in my skiing ability for it!

I am visiting family in Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, so I have posted pictures from the 2007-2008 ski season.

Bridges is my favorite of the easy green ski runs. I love the house on the left of the bridge with its copper roof and guttering. They have a great ski-in, ski-out location!

Lunch on the Mountain

Happy Thanksgiving!! I am visiting family in Oklahoma this week so I have posted pictures from the 2007-2008 ski season.

One of my favorite stops for lunch is at Gorrono's, a ski-in, ski-out only restaurant located off of the runs from lift 4. I usually eat the elk chili with manchego cheese.

Wilson Peak

I am visiting family in Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, so this week I have posted pictures from the 2007-2008 ski season.

This is the view of Wilson Peak from Guiseppe's Restaurant at the top of chair 9. I took this in April of this year, a time when most locations in the U.S. are experiencing spring conditions.

I am visiting family in Oklahoma for Thanksgiving, so this week I have posted pictures from the 2007-2008 ski season.

This is two of my kids snowboarding the blue run named Sundance. The run is named after the Sundance Kid, partner to Butch Cassidy. They robbed their first bank in Telluride in 1889.

Jeep King of the Mountain

I am visiting family in Oklahoma this week for Thanksgiving, so I have posted pictures from the 2007-2008 ski season.

Olympian snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis competed and won in Telluride's Jeep King of the Mountain last year.

After hiking up to Bear Creek Falls Tuesday, I noticed the perfect reflection in the water as I came out onto Pine Street and had to take a picture of it.

Snow Melt

There is a small stream coming down from Bear Creek Falls where it gets just enough sun to melt some snow and ice for the creek to continue running.

Thursday, November 20, 2008

Bear Creek Falls Frozen

The Bear Creek Falls trail is so popular that right after snowfall it has enough traffic to pack down the snow making it ready to hike and walk your dog up to the falls. Below is a photo that I posted previously from our hike in June. There will be back country skiers dropping into the canyon soon, also, then skiing all the way down the trail to town.

Lost Mittens

On the fence outside of the ski swap someone strung up a line for the lost mittens and gloves. If you lost a glove while vacationing here last winter, chances are it's right here.

No Dogs Allowed

In Telluride dogs are allowed to go into several businesses, including banks, but not into the ski swap. These dogs looked sad in their parking place.
